Let’s listen to the song “The Earth” by Michael Jackson.
Questions:
1. What does Michael Jackson tell us in the song?
He tells about human attitude to the Earth.
He tells about Environmental problems.

T. You are right! Our planet is beautiful, but a man sometimes damages our Earth. A great theme for discussion is concerned nowadays. It’s pollution of the environment. Let’s denote Environmental Problems and fill in the grade.

PI. Land Pollution. When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can. Once a week a garbage truck comes and the can is emptied, and that's the last you see of it. But it does not disappear. It is taken to a garbage dump. Most of our garbage is just buried. Now we are making so much garbage that in many places there is not enough room to bury it all.

P2. Air Pollution. The biggest polluter today is the car. Exhaust fumes are the main cause of poor air quality. This problem is especially bad in cities, where the number of cars is increasing every year. Large cities with thousands of smoky industrial enterprises appear all over the world today. The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables. Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut and burnt in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up.

P3. The Greenhouse Effect. Pollution from cars, factories and power stations is causing harmful greenhouse gases to build up in the Earth's atmosphere. These gases prevent heat from escaping, and as a result our planet is getting warmer. This process is known as global warming. Global warming is causing the ice at the North and South Poles to melt and sea levels and sea temperatures to rise, leading to serious flooding and violent storms in many parts of the world. In other places, there will be less rain and the land will be turned into desert.

P4. Water Pollution. The Planet Earth is mostly water. Oceans cover the biggest part of it — and there are lakes, rivers, streams, — and even water underground. All life on the Earth from the smallest bug to the biggest whale — depends on the water. It's precious. But we are not doing a very good job of keeping water clean. In many places the water has become polluted. Rivers and lakes are polluted by garbage or by poisonous chemicals which are dumped right into them. Underground water can be polluted by gasoline or by harmful liquids that seep into the ground.

P5. Climate Change. Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing the world today. Many scientists believe the changes we have seen over the last century are mainly due to man's activities. The earth is kept warm by greenhouse gases. Without these the world would be extremely cold. The problem is that man's activities have produced extra greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide which have increased temperatures further. Climate changes is also making conditions difficult for some animals.
In the Arctic, the ice is melting, threatening the survival of animals such s polar bears.

T. I'd like you to sum up the information about global ecological problems. You are given one half  of the sentences. Ask questions to each other to make up a whole sentence.

1.     The air, water and soil composition has great influence on people's health.
2.     Numerous plants, factories, mines, pollute everything around.
3.     Over the past few years we have been constantly speaking about ozone holes, droughts, high level of radiation, about food contaminated with chemicals.
4.     The wastes from plants and factories contaminate water and soil.

Brain storm

1.     The name of the whole nature on the world. (environment)

5.     Global process that is taking place on the Earth. (global warming-up process)
6.     The chemical name of harmful gas for atmosphere. (carbon dioxide)
7.     The effect that carbon dioxide create. (the greenhouse effect)
8.     Food is contaminated with them. (chemicals)
9.     The season that has changed greatly due to the greenhouse effect. (winter)
10.                        Things that release carbon dioxide. (industrial facilities and cars)

T. Fill in the gaps with words derived from the words in brackets.

There are many problems which (1)__________(threat) our natural environment. Acid rain, (2)__________(globe) warming and air and water (3)__________(pollute) are among the most serious ones. There are several ways to help improve the situation. Firstly, we should encourage (4)__________(recycle) because it is the(5)__________(produce) of new materials which causes the most damage. We must learn to reuse things like plastic bags and glass jars. Secondly, driving an environmentally- friendly car is also(6)__________(help).Furthermore, joining an (7)__________(organize) which plants trees or cleans up beaches would be a (8)__________(prove) that you are really (9)__________(concern) about the environment. Lastly, supporting groups such as Greenpeace, which try to prevent many(10)__________(environment) disasters, would help to ensure that our planet will be clean and safe for the future generations.

Keys: 1.threaten; 2. global; 3. pollution; 4. recycling; 5. production; 6.helpful; 7. organization; 8. proof; 9. concerned; 10. environmental.

T. Wath the cartoon. Pay attention to three “R”s. What are they? How can we reduce the pollution?

Reuse, reduce, recycle

P.
Reuse - we can use any thing one more time.
Reduce – to save products not to use more energy for making them.
Recycle – to make new things out of used ones.

T. Take out a key word and make up the sentence to know how we can help our planet.

Words:
reusable bags
lights
a tree
bottles
natural cleaners
packaging
repair
reuse
paper

-         Many grocery stores sell reusable bags (usually 99 cents), buy them and use them.
-         Turn off the lights when you are not in the room.
-         Plant a tree or other plants.
-         Use refillable bottles for water.
-         Use natural cleaners whenever possible like lemons and baking soda.
-         Avoid products with several layers of packaging when only one is sufficient. About 33% of what we throw away is packaging.
-         Maintain and repair durable products instead of buying new ones.
-         Buy products that you can reuse.
-         Copy and print on both sides of paper.

T.
Today environmental issues are much spoken and written about on TV, radio and in the newspapers. Fortunately, it’s not too late to solve these problems. If we take actions now, there might be some hope for the future. Together we can save the planet and all of us with it. If we want to survive, we must do our best to solve these problems. It is important to join our efforts in the struggle for survival. We are responsible for preserving our planet for future generations. The life of future generations depends on our attitude towards environment and the way each of us treats nature.

A song
Mother Earth, Mother Earth,
It’s a great place to be.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth,
Home planet for you and me.
Look after our Earth with care
‘Cos it’s a planet we all share.
Humans, animals, plants and trees
Let’s live together in harmony.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth,
It’s a great place to be.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth,
Home planet for you and me.
In ourselves we must take pride
For our future we need to strive (старатися)
Be kind it’s worthwhile
Light the world up with your smile.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth,
It’s a great place to be.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth,
Home planet for you and me.
It’s a great place to be

in a peace and harmony.
We’ll have to stop now. That’s all for today. I'd like to thank you for good work at the lesson. All of you worked very well. I give excellent marks to..., good- to :, etc. I wish you good luck.
